Conquering Financial Stress

It seems that everyone has some financial stress.  I once read that money was the number one cause of divorce.  I don’t know if that is true or not but I know people get stressed out when they cannot pay the bills.

Households headed by single parents are much more likely then two parent households to have money problems.  And money problems cause stress!

When you have money problems, there are two things you can do to help the situation:

  • Spend Less
  • Make More

And then there is learning to not be stressed about it.  We all have money wounds that need to be healed and money attitudes that need to be addressed. Anyway this page is going to be devoted to all those issues. As always I would love to hear your comments.  You might get mad at my attitude about child support. (While I believe that the non custodial parent should pay for child support and most who do don’t pay enough, I do not think the custodial parent should expend too much energy and heartache  into fighting for it. Because financially, I think they would do better better by putting that energy into a business.  I will explain in a later article.) We’ll see.

Making Ends Meet

Many single moms just do not make enough money with one job to support their families. It is a fact and many single parents leave their kids alone so they can go out and work a second job. My mom had to do it. If you find yourself in this situation, please try to hold on long enough to start a part time business instead.  Why? Because you will never get rich by working for someone else.  I know you probably are just trying to pay the bills, keep the phone from being turned off. But if you enter that treadmill it will be too hard to get off. Better to cut out fast food, cut off the cable and shop at goodwill (temporarily) while you make money with your new business.

Avoid Common Pitfalls

When I was a single mom that still had a job, (Now I make my living without a job!), I tried working as a Pampered Chef Consultant and as a Mary Kay Consultant. I also sold Avon.

None of these worked for me and I will tell you why.

  • First of all they took me away from home too much.
  • Avon was the most lucrative and easiest because I had customers coming to my desk at work. That was also a negative.  I could sell a lot to the other employees where I worked but it was not professional and I gave it up because I wanted to progress in my main job.
  • Pampered Chef had a low commission structure.  You really could only make good money by recruiting other sales reps.  Some women really did make money but they were gifted sales people who would have made money in any sales job.
  • Mary Kay had a great commission structure but you had to buy your own products and always ended up with lots of product that you could not sell.  (Old colors etc.) Again, if you were a gifted sales person, you could succeed.  I wasn’t.

So What Kind of Business Should I Run?

An On-line business silly! Running an on-line business is the obvious answer.  Why?
  • You don’t have to leave the kids.
  • Low start up costs
  • A global customer base
  • Fun
  • the kids can be involved and learn too!

How come everyone is not doing it? Well a lot of people are trying and failing.  I have had web sites for years and only recently started making money from them.

What has made the difference?

  • Learning from mentors
  • Goal setting
  • Concentrating on my strengths

You have got to know yourself and you must not try to be what you are not. Anyway, I will be talking about some on-line income sources and steering you to some good mentors.  Please keep in touch and tell me how it goes. My goal for you is that you will start by running a profitable on-line business but end by quitting the rat race and making a living without a job, like me!
