2009 Writing Contests

Don’t think that these contests are only for eggheads. A kid who does not like writing will get excited really quickly when he knows he could get $5,000!  And the chances of winning these contests are much better then playing the lottery or entering sweepstakes because there are far fewer competing for the prize. Winning or placing in these contests also looks great on a college application. Maybe you could offer an incentive for your child to enter or do what I did. I gave this list to Daniel’s teachers.  I am hoping that one of them will use a contest as an assignment.

Prickly Pear Short Story Contest.  There is no entry fee; there are prizes for first place ($100), second place ($30), and third place ($15).  Our purpose is to encourage and reward young authors in a creative pursuit often overlooked in high school academic settings.  Our rules and guidelines can be found on our website at http://www.pricklypearcontest.com and we can be contacted with any questions at pricklypearcontest@gmail.comThe deadline for submissions is November 1.

The Dream Quest One Poetry & Writing Contest

This competition welcomes anyone who loves arranging words into the beautiful art of poetry or to write a short story that is worth telling everyone. And to all who have the ability to dream... Write a poem or short story for a chance to win cash prizes. All works must be original.

Guidelines:

Write a poem, thirty lines or fewer on any subject, style, or form, typed or neatly hand printed.

And/or write a short story, five pages maximum length, on any subject or theme, creative writing fiction or non-fiction (including essay compositions, diary, journal entries and screenwriting). Also, must be typed or neatly hand printed.

Multiple poetry and short story entries are accepted.

Deadline (bi-annual): July 31st and December 31st each year

Prizes:

Writing Contest First Prize is $500. Second Prize: $250. Third Prize: $100.

Poetry Contest First Prize is $250. Second Prize: $125. Third Prize: $50.

Entry fees:

Writing Contest entry fee: $10 per short story.

Poetry Contest entry fee: $5 per poem.

To send entries: Include title(s) with your story (ies) or poem(s), along with your name, address, phone#, email, brief biographical info. (Tell us a little about yourself), on the coversheet. Add a self-addressed stamped envelope for entry confirmation. Fees payable to: “Dreamquestone.Com”

MrsP.com Writing Contest for Kids

Deadline:  September 1- October 15th, 2009

Prizes: Two Contestants Entries will be produced and published as a read-aloud book performed by Mrs P, will be posted on (http://www.MrsP.com) and, at Sponsor’s sole discretion, may be posted on any other Website URL suitable for viewing by children. Each Grand Prize winner shall receive one (1) published copy of their winning Entry.  Both grand prize winners will also each receive one (1) $25 gift certificate to Powells.com.  One grand prize will be awarded to a Contestant between 4 and 8 years of age, and one grand prize shall be awarded to a Contestant between 9 and 13 years of age.
 RUNNERS UP:  Sponsor shall award up to eight (8) other contestants with $25 gift certificates to Powells.com.

Mrs P invites children to write a story on any topic, no less than 250 words and not to exceed 1,000 words. It may be fiction or non-fiction. All participants must be between the ages of 4 and 13 years old. There are two age competition categories: 4 to 8 years of age, and 9 to 13 years of age.

 The two (2) Grand Prize winners’ stories will be read by Mrs. P and original illustrations will be created. The lucky child will receive an actual copy of the story in addition to having it posted on the web site (www.MrsP.com) for viewers to watch and enjoy. MrsP Enterpises, LLC pays all costs of producing the winning book.

The two (2) Grand Prize Winners’ stories will be the sole property of MrsP Enterprises, LLC. For complete details, see the following Mrs P’s Children's Book Writing Contest Official Rules. You’ll need your parents’ permission to participate “ so get them to read through the contest rules and regulations! Then have your story ready to cut and paste into the story entry form.
